Like any respected Mesopotamian ruler, Nabopolassar found the time and necessary resources to fulfill the most noble duty of a king of Babylon: the (re)building and repair of sanctuaries and temples, most notably, those in his imperial capital Babylon. In addition, he took it upon himself to sponsor construction on his royal residence (the so-called "South Palace"), as well as his capital's defenses, from both military aggression and the ravages of the Araḫtu River, an arm of the Euphrates that divided Babylon in two. As far as his and his son's inscriptions are preserved, Nabopolassar is known to have sponsored building activities in and near four northern Babylonian cities: Babylon, Borsippa, Kish, and Sippar. Presumably, he built in other cities, like his son.
