Walls and Gates of Babylon

Babylon

The walls of the inner city of Babylon, Imgur-Enlil and Nēmetti-Enlil, together with their eight city gates, are mentioned in numerous cuneiform sources of the second and first millennia BC. Fewer sources, however, mention the eastern outer wall, which the founder of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, Nabopolassar (r. 625–605 BC), started planning and constructing and which was completed by his son and immediate successor Nebuchadnezzar II (r. 604–562 BC).
