Ashurbanipal 256

A four-line dedicatory inscription of Ashurbanipal is inscribed on a brick that was found in the structure of the ziggurat at Dūr-Kurigalzu (modern Aqar Quf). It is possible that this Akkadian text is addressed to the god Enlil.

Commentary

The brick was built into the southwest façade of the ziggurat at Aqar Quf, which is reported not to have been its original position. Iraqi archaeologists excavated that part of the temple-tower in 1968–69. No excavation or museum number for the object is known. The text is inscribed, not stamped, in contemporary Babylonian script and it is edited from the published photograph. The suggested reading of the divine name in line 1 is uncertain, but is supported by the fact that most royal inscriptions from Dūr-Kurigalzu were dedicated to the god Enlil.
