Traditionally, the administrative corpus of Middle Assyrian period is believed to start with the reign of Aššur-nīrārī III (KAJ 177) and end with the reign of Aššur-bēl-kala (allegedly Giricano tablets). There are older and younger tablets that fell between the respective Old Assyrian-Middle Assyrian and Middle Assyrian-Neo Assyrian periods However, these are exceptions and often concern documents that are atypical for the main corpus. For the general dating of the kings, this overview follows Freydank (1991: BMCG, 188‒89).

The Assyrian empire used its own calendar up till the end of the corpus. By the Neo-Assyrian period it had been completely replaced by Babylonian month names An overview of the order of month names is given in the table below. See for instance Cancik-Kirschbaum / Johnson (2011‒12: SAAB 19) for one of the more recent studies to the Middle Assyrian calendar. For the local month names used at Ṭabetu, see Shibata (2010: StCH 1).

The years in Assyrian documents are dated after the serving līmu-official (eponym). While documents with the eponym order did exist, only KAV 21 + is known for the Middle Assyrian period, which only starts with the last decade of Tiglath-pileser I. For this reason, the chronology of the eponyms has to be reconstructed, a process that is far from complete. Below, a provisional lists of all known eponyms on oracc/tcma can found. The list may serve two purposes: It can be used as a quick reference for the approximate dating of documents. Secondly, is intended as blue print for a future system of semi-automated dating the text editions on oracc/tcma. As such the list is not intended to be a statement on the chronological order of eponyms in the Middle Assyrian period, but rather the "median" of the main studies to Middle Assyrian chronology. It could not take all studies to chronology into account. In particular some recently proposed eponym sequences that are not fixed to specific years are difficult to apply to a list such as this one. However, it is intended to be have this page improved upon over time.
This table is composed from the chronological construction of the reign from Tukultī-Ninurta I to Tiglathpileser I by Freydank (2016, AOAT 429). The reconstruction of the reign of Shalmaneser I follows Bloch (2008 and 2012) The early Middle Assyrian period follows Saporetti (1979 = EMA) and Freydank (1991 = BMCG). Supplemented information for the reign of Tiglathpileser I is taken from Shibata (2022). Where possible a sequence of eponyms is given, however apart from the king taken the office of eponym in his first year, there is never certainty that this reconstruction is correct. This is most definitely the case for the second half of the reign of Tukultī-Ninurta I, where the sequence is very fluent and based on Freydank (2016) who used the information by Wiggermann from the mostly unpublished Tell Ṣabī Abyaḍ tablets (ibid., 21ff). This lists is composed under the assumption that in the 13th and 11th Centuries, the identity is known of the eponyms during the reigns of Shalmaneser I until Enlil-kudurrī-uṣur and the reigns of Aššur-rēša-īši I/Tiglathpileser I (first half). Therefore, uncertain eponyms from this period are assigned to Adad-nīrārī I and Aššur-dān I based on whether these are early or late. This leaves over 30 eponyms for Adad-nīrārī, which is too much for his 30 years reign.
