(2') [Nabû-zēr-kitti-līšir, the reb]el, the tra[itor, heard of the approach of my army and fl]ed [like a fox to the land Elam]. Because of the oath of the great gods [which he had transgressed, the gods Aššur, Sîn, Šamaš, Bēl, and Nabû] imposed a grievous punishment [on him and they killed him with the sword in the midst of the land Elam. (5′) Naʾid-Marduk, his brother, saw the] evil [deeds] that [they had done] to his brother i[n Elam], he [fled] from the land Elam [to save] his life, [and came to Assyria, before me]. I had pity on [Naʾid-Marduk and U]mmanigaš (Ḫuban-nikaš), his brother, (and) [I made] the Sealand [subject to him (Naʾid-Marduk). I imposed upon him the tribute and paym]ent of my lordship yearly, without ce[asing].

(r 2b) [The awesomeness of m]y [lordship] overwhelmed [Hazael], and he brought with (him) gold, silver, (and) precious [stones, his heavy audience gift, to Nineveh], before me, and kissed my feet. I added sixty-five ca[mels (and) ten donkeys to the tribu]te (which was paid to) my father and (rev. 5) imposed (it) on him. Later, Hazael [died and] I placed [Iaʾutâ (Iataʾ), his son, on] his throne. I added ten minas of gold, one thousand choice stones, fifty [camels, (and) one hundred bags of aromatics to the tribute] of his father and imposed (it) on him. Uabu, the ki[ng of ..., to exercise kingship], incited all of the Arabs to rebel against Iaʾutâ (Iataʾ).

1[m]um?-man-ga-áš “[U]mmanigaš”: The reading of the name is uncertain, as only the right half of the head of the final vertical of the um sign is preserved.

2[EN-u-ti]-ia “[m]y [lordship]”: The updated reading is based on collation; the sign before šat-ti-šam (“yearly”) appears to be the end of the ia sign. Note also that there is no ma between šat-ti-šam and la and that the sign after i-na is not NINA; compare RINAP 4 p. 77.

3RINAP 4 restores the end of the obverse and the beginning of the reverse as [it-ti ta-mar-ti-šú ka]-bit-ti “[together with his] heavy [audience gift].” This restoration has been removed since audience-gifts (tāmartu) are brought voluntarily to Assyria, not by force, and since there are at least four signs missing from the beginning of rev. 1. The word šallatu (“booty”) likely appears before kabitti (“heavy”); note, however, that itti šallatišu kabitti is not presently attested in the Esarhaddon corpus.

4The use of it-ti with a-di IGI-ia ub-lam-ma, “he brought ... before me,” is not otherwise attested in the inscriptions of Esarhaddon and is grammatically awkward. Based on similar passages, one expects il-lak-am-ma “he came and.” Compare, for example, text no. 1 (Nineveh A) ii 63–64.

5Hazael’s son Iaʾutâ (written mia-ʾu-ta-a), or Iaʾtâ (written mia--ta-a), is called Iataʾ (written mia-ta-) in text no. 1 (Nineveh A), Iaʾlû (written mia--lu-ú) in text no. 2 (Nineveh B), and Iautiʾ (written mia-u-ti- and mia-u-te-) in text no. 97 (Monument A).
