During the second phase of scribal education, there still were sign lists, god lists and vocabularies but, as expected, they were all more sophisticated. The sign lists, for instance, took into consideration compound signs, while both god lists and thematic lists preserved rare and obsolete words that were known only by the scribes. The lists are also more and more exhaustive, providing synonyms, homonyms and antonyms, that could be used as sources for commentaries. They thus become scholarly reference works, to be used only by scribes belonging to a literate elite.
